Forensic Entomology: Undergraduate Research with Jordan Chapman In forensic entomology, succession is the amalgamation and disbursal of different insects throughout the decay process. Each insect performs a specific task with the corpse as it decomposes. This project studies the different arthropods involved in the fresh, bloat, active, and dry stages of decay in two 100 pound pigs. Practically, this research may be used to create a projected post mortem interval; that is, it will inform investigators how long a corpse has been at the site, and most likely how long the body has been dead. Data (insects, temperatures, humidity) vary per region, so succession studies cannot be standardized.
